We have teams for men who will be at least 50 years old in 2008. If you are a player without a team call us
and get assigned to a team. If you have a team that plays 50's ball bring the whole team into our league. We play on
Thurdsay nights at Berliner Park starting at 6:00 PM, with a second game starting at 7:15 PM. This is an organized league with a Commissioner, Board of Directors, Uniforms, Sponsors and everything.
We need some players to help run the league and make it grow, so if you want to be a part of that, say so.
Sign-up now.

New:
July 16, 2008
We stomped Ernie's Carryout last night .
We felt in control the entire game .
Gary Rogers played right field like a champ with his sprained
ankle .
We batted 14 players in our lineup and everyone seemed to
contribute.
Glen Ford's over-the -fence (Right center field) 3-run home run
in the 6 run fourth inning was a thing of beauty .
It seemed like a dagger to the heart of Ernie's Carryout. They
got very quiet and never recovered
Our team defense was very good once again !
It was truly a team victory as everyone contributed to the win
over an excellent team that beat us 34-13
in the first Tuesday night league game, outscoring us 19-2 in
the last 2 innings.
Go GRAY SOX !

Gray Sox 1 0 0 6 2 4 0 13

The Schones team will be playing ball in the 50's league
during the 2008 season. The league is getting bigger and the quality of
play is getting better. There is room for as many teams and ballplayers as
want to play. Additional teams are forming.
Play
Ball !!!!!!!!
Our Central Ohio 50's Softball League has a $492.89 balance
carryover from 2006 and 2007 after league start up expenses and league playing
expenses were paid. We have 7 dozen Trump 44/525 synthetic cover
softballs on hand. We have 4 - 2007 SPA (Softball Players Association) strike
mats on hand that we will use this year, so two more should be purchased this
year to equal the number of teams.
Tom Jackson, who manages Landstar ( formerly Rustic Saloon), has
paid $ 375.00 for Landstar's entry fee.
Larry Milliron, who manages Schone Chiropractic, has paid $ 375.00 for Schone's.
If all 6 teams pay $375.00, player fees for this year will total $ 2250. With
last year's
$ 492.89 end-of -year balance added, the working capital for this year should
be $ 2742.89.
Today’s league balance is $ 1242.89
Team Payment Options:
Fixed
- team pays lump sum $ 375.00 by April 30, 2008 . Under
the Fixed Payment Plan,
additional Players may be added to the team roster at
no extra charge for the entire season.
The roster maximum is 20 players. The roster minimum is 10 players.
Variable
: team pays a minimum of $250.00 due by
April 30; $125.00 balance due May 30, 2008.
If a team cannot pay $375.00 total by May 30, 2008 due to a lack of players, $
25.00 per each roster player under 15 players will be subtracted from $375.00
team fee due. Teams under the Variable Payment Plan that add players after May
30 will be charged $20.00 per player. The roster maximum is 20 players. The
roster minimum is 10 players. A minimum of ten players must be on the roster by
April 30, 2008 to avoid forfeit games.
Player Registration Forms
All players must have a completed Central Ohio Senior Softball Association
Player Registration Form on file with the League Commissioner by April 30 to be
classified as an eligible player. Players added to rosters after April 30 must
have Registration Forms completed before they are eligible to play. Previous
years’ forms on file are acceptable
All players must have a copy of a state or federal issued Drivers License,
Federal ID Card, Military ID, or State ID on file with the League Commissioner
to be eligible to play by April 30.
Players may cross out all sensitive info except the Date-Of-Birth and Picture.
If a player objects to having his DOB on file, he may present the
Original ID and a copy to the League Commissioner. The League
Commissioner will verify the player's "Playing Age" and note it on the copy. A
player’s "Playing Age" is his age on 12-31-2008.

Rules: Tuesday Night
Central Ohio 50’s
Softball League 2008 Playing Rules
Official Softball Players
Association (SPA) playing rules will be followed except for exceptions,
modifications or clarifications in those rules:
1. To be eligible to play in this league, a player must reach his 50th
birthday during the
calendar year ending December 31st.
Each player who is new to this league must submit a completed Central Ohio 50’s
Softball League Registration Form and acceptable proof of age and identity. New
players may furnish a copy of any of the below items to meet that requirement :
Drivers license, state ID, federal ID, or any other picture ID deemed acceptable
by the League Commissioner or his designate.
2. Each team shall provide a roster of players by a date specified by the
League Commissioner or designate. Each player and each team shall meet any
league eligibility and league financial obligations before playing in a game. A
player may not appear on more than one team roster. A player must get a release
from his first team before he plays for a second team. The League Commissioner
reserves the right to make a final determination to which team a player will be
assigned.
3. Ten players is the required number to begin a game, but a team may start a
game with 9 players under the following condition: A name must be placed at the
bottom of the batting order for a 10th
player. That spot
in the batting order will be recorded as an automatic out until it is filled by
a 10th
player. A manager may loan
a player from his team to another team that only has 9 players; it is not
mandatory. A team may play 11 players on defense.
4. If a team cannot field at least 9 players at the scheduled time of a game
from its own roster, it shall forfeit the game. There shall be a 10 minute grace
period. The score of a forfeit game will be 10-0. The teams may play a practice
game that does not count in the standings.
5. A team may continue a game with fewer players than which it began the
game, but with no less than 9 players. When a player who has left the game is
scheduled to bat, an out shall be declared for each scheduled turn at bat for
that player when he cannot immediately be replaced by a substitute from his team
roster or by a substitute on loan from the opposing team’s roster. In case of
injury to a player who then removes himself from the game, the opposing manager
may waive the mandatory out as long as ten batters remain in the lineup. A
player who is removed from the game due to injury may not return to the game.
6. The batting order shall include at least all defensive players and should
be exchanged between managers at least 15 minutes before the start of the game.
Any number of extra roster players may be designated at any place in the batting
order. These players may enter the game on defense at any time but the batting
order must remain the same throughout the game. If a player shows up to play
after the first pitch, he may be added to the bottom of the batting lineup. If
desired, players present at the time the first pitch is thrown but not in the
original batting order, may be added to the bottom of the lineup at any time.
Roster players not listed in the batting lineup may be used as pinch hitters or
courtesy runners. The re-entry and substitution rules shall apply to all
players.
7. A courtesy runner may be used for a base runner at any time. This rule is
intended to permit a courtesy runner for an injured or physically impaired base
runner and not to gain a competitive advantage. Any player on the team roster
may be used as a courtesy runner. A courtesy runner may not run more than once
in the same inning for other players. Once a courtesy runner touches a base, he
becomes the runner of record. If a second offensive player touches the base,
that a courtesy runner occupies, an out shall be called and the courtesy runner
shall be removed from the base that he occupies. No courtesy runner may be
replaced by another courtesy runner except for an injury that causes his
permanent removal from the game. If a courtesy runner is on base when it is his
turn to bat, he will be called out. He will be removed from base and come to
bat. If his removal from the base results in the third out, he will be the
leadoff batter in the next inning. A second courtesy runner cannot be
substituted at this time nor may a substitute be inserted into the batting line
up in his spot in an attempt to circumvent this rule.
8. A regulation SPA strike mat shall be used. A legal pitch that strikes any
portion of the strike mat will be called a strike. Legal pitch height is 6’-12’.
The pitch must have an arc.
9. Each player will begin his time at bat with a 0-0 count.
10. After 2 strikes are called on a batter, any subsequent foul ball shall be
called an out. Any foul ball that is caught above the batter’s head shall be
called out.
11. Intentional walks may be given to a batter by the defensive team by
having the catcher or the team manager request that the umpire award the batter
first base without any subsequent pitches being thrown.
12. A base runner who leaves base before a pitched ball touches the ground,
is hit, or reaches home plate, shall be called out.
13. A double base shall be used at first base. When a batter-runner is going
to first base, he must use the portion of the double first base that extends
into foul territory. The defense must use the portion of the double first base
that is in fair territory. If the defensive man is pulled across the first base
bag into foul territory by a thrown ball, the runner is allowed to use the
portion of the bag that is in fair territory in an attempt to avoid a collision
with the defensive player. If there is no play at first base, a batter-runner
may use the portion of the double first base that is in fair territory.
14. A runner who reaches first base safely and overruns it, may return to
first base without liability of being put out provided that he does not attempt
to advance to second base or fake an advance to second base.
15. Sliding is permitted at any base.
16. A runner shall slide, get down or get out of the way on plays at second
base or at third base in an attempt to prevent a collision with a defensive
player. The defensive player has the bag if there is a play at that base.
17. A runner shall be called out for contact with a defensive player if, in
the judgment of the umpire, the contact was deliberate or the runner could
reasonably have been expected to minimize or avoid contact under the
circumstances and failed to do so. If the contact is determined to be flagrant,
the runner shall be ejected from the game.
18. Obstruction shall be called when a defensive player makes contact with a
runner if, in the judgment of the umpire, the contact was deliberate or the
defensive player could reasonably have been expected to minimize or to avoid
contact under the circumstances and failed to do so. If the contact is
determined to be flagrant, the defensive player shall be ejected from the game.
19. A runner who is advancing towards the scoring plate from third base and
whose foot touches the ground on or past the commitment line must continue
toward the scoring plate and cannot return across the commitment line towards
third base. The commitment line is a line marked on the ground perpendicular to
the foul line halfway between home and third base. An out shall be called on the
runner for a violation of this rule.
20. A defensive player may retire the runner who is advancing towards the
scoring plate only by having possession of the ball while touching the home
plate section of the strike mat after the runner has crossed the commitment
line, but before the runner touches the scoring plate. A runner who has crossed
the commitment line is not out if tagged by a defensive player. The runner shall
be called out if he touches or crosses over the strike zone mat while attempting
to score.
21. The infield fly rule will be used.
22. During the first 6 innings of any game, a team may score a maximum of 6
runs per inning. During last inning, during the last declared inning, or during
any extra innings, teams may score unlimited runs.
23. When 2 games are to be played back- to -back on a diamond without lights,
no inning in the first game may begin later than 60 minutes from the start of
the game. This time period may change depending upon available daylight. A game
that is ended due to darkness, inclement weather, or other unforeseen reason
shall be called a complete game if 4 ½ innings or more have been played and the
home team is ahead in the score, or if 5 or more complete innings have been
played and the home team is ahead in the score. Games called due to the above
circumstances, where less than 5 innings have been played, shall be suspended
and resumed at a later date and time that is agreed upon by the team managers.
The game shall begin at the point where it was suspended and shall be played to
its normal end. If a suspended game or postponed game is rescheduled as part of
a double header , the second game shall be the suspended or the postponed game.
24. If a game is tied after the final declared inning , it shall be called a
suspended game. It shall be resumed in accordance with rule #23 above.
25. Metal spikes or hard plastic spikes similar to metal spikes are not
permitted.
26. Only bats marked " Official Softball ," that are approved by NSA and
which are marked 1.20 BPF may be used. A player who is discovered using an
illegal bat, a non- approved bat, or an altered bat shall be called out and
ejected from the game. Exceptions to this rule would be wooden softball bats and
other bats that , due to their nature and age, may be approved before the game
by the umpire if the umpire feels that they don’t exceed NSA bat standards.
27. Game balls will be furnished by the Central Ohio 50’s Softball League.
They shall be Yellow Optic and shall be have a .44COR and 525 pounds
compression. Each manager shall supply at least one new league approved ball to
the umpire before each game. Good used softballs of the same COR and Compression
that are supplied by the team managers and approved by the home plate umpire may
also be used. The Umpires must inspect all softballs before they are put in
play. Other new game balls may be approved by the League Commissioner or his
designate for use.
28. Team representatives and the umpire will establish ground rules
29. Only a team manager or his designated representative may discuss a call
with an umpire. Judgment calls by an umpire are not subject to discussion.
30. If an umpire arrives unfit to umpire a game, or he is not available at
game time, the team managers may agree upon using a designated person(s) ,
including players, to umpire. The game shall counted as an official game. If the
managers cannot agree upon a person(s) to umpire the game, they may elect to
play a practice game. A scheduled game has precedence over a practice game.
31. A home team must allow the visiting team to use the field 20 minutes
before game time.
32. The home team is the first team listed in the league schedule and is
assigned to the third base bench. The bench assignment may be waived by
agreement.
33. A team manager should notify the opposing team manager as soon as
possible if he knows that a game is to be cancelled for non-weather related
reasons.
34. Issues relevant to the game should be resolved on the field of play. A
judgment call by an umpire cannot be challenged. Off field protests should be
limited to player eligibility. Protests shall be ruled upon by the League
Commissioner and / or the League Commissioner’s designate(s).
